Getting Assistance To Recover From Alcohol Substance Abuse

by Admin on Feb.29, 2012, under Uncategorized

The battle over controlling your drinking can lead to heartache not just for you, but for loved ones. You may also have lost control over your budget and your relationships with others as your drinking increased. You can begin to take steps to get back on track by considering getting involved in rehabilitation to help you deal with your alcoholism.

Taking Stock

If you drink heavily, one thing that may be blocking you from sobriety is the fear of withdrawal. Most rehab centers offer a controlled setting where you can wean yourself from alcohol, and in some cases, receive additional medication to ease the transition. This support can help you to avoid an extreme reaction as the alcohol leaves your body.

Withdrawal

Once you have moved on from the initial withdrawal, the treatment generally can move toward dealing with the problems that may be behind your level of alcohol abuse. A review of issues that can involve family, friends, career or other elements troubling you in your life will help you understand what is behind your alcoholism. Once your drinking has stopped, problems may become more evident and easier to fix.

Types Of Treatment

Therapy to treat alcoholism can be in-patient or out-patient, depending on the severity of the case. In-patient at a treatment center or medical facility may be required if there are additional medical issues at hand. Out-patient rehabilitation can be an option that allows a person to continue to live at home while coming to a center for therapy. Either treatment can begin the process of therapy and counseling with others that is necessary to quit drinking.

Group Sessions

These therapy sessions are a chance to talk frankly about alcoholism with others. You can share discussions with people dealing with different types of addiction. You might also be in a focus group of alcoholics. Both groups are opportunities to find solutions to issues surrounding addiction. You may, for example, discover what role stress plays in drinking and other addictions.

Individual Counseling

Separate sessions may involve just you and a counselor, or you and your family meeting with a therapist. These sessions can provide a nonjudgmental atmosphere of getting to the root of the problems behind your particular overuse of alcohol. The talks may offer a chance for you to improve individual relationships with those closest to you as you work through your issues with alcohol.

Making Changes

Through your efforts in therapy and discussing your problems with other alcoholics or those with addiction issues, you may find new strategies for coping or dealing with things that need to change in your life. You may find that keeping a journal, for example, can illuminate certain elements in your life that trigger periods of heavy drinking. Find a inpatient rehabilitation program.

Special Event: Kevin Brownlow on Napoleon

by Admin on Feb.28, 2012, under San Francisco Cinemas/Movies

Timed to coincide with the four screenings of Abel Gance’s masterpiece Napoleon (1927) at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland (March 24–April 1), the San Francisco Silent Film Festival and Berkeley Art Museum / Pacific Film Archive are delighted to welcome British film historian Kevin Brownlow to the PFA Theater for a lecture on the restoration of the film, a project that has preoccupied Brownlow for much of his prestigious career.
Brownlow, the first film historian ever honored with a special Academy Award in 2010, became fascinated with Gance’s film when still a schoolboy in London in the 1950s. “I was stunned by the cinematic flair,” says Brownlow. “I was exhilarated by the rapid cutting and the swirling camera movement. What daring! I had never seen anything comparable—and I set out to find more of it.” That determination led to a lifelong quest.
The first major Brownlow/BFI restoration culminated in a screening at the Telluride Film Festival in 1979, with eighty-nine-year-old Gance watching from a nearby hotel window. In the intervening years, Brownlow has been involved with additional restorations. The current version of the film reclaims about thirty minutes of footage culled from archives around the world. Don’t miss this rare chance to hear Brownlow discuss the project. His talk will be illustrated with scenes from the film, accompanied by Judith Rosenberg on piano.
Kevin Brownlow: “Abel Gance’s Napoleon, A Restoration Project Spanning a Lifetime” takes place Friday, March 30, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. Live musical accompaniment will be provided by Judith Rosenberg on the piano.
For more information about the extremely rare screenings of Napoleon, presented by SFSFF with Carl Davis conducting the Oakland East Bay Symphony, visit silentfilm.org.
Interested individuals will also want to tune-in on March 24 when Kevin Brownlow appears on West Coast Live, a two-hour radio variety show hosted by Sedge Thomson which broadcasts live-to-satellite Saturday mornings in front of West Coast theater audience and coast-to-coast radio fans.

Learn How To Get Your Passport Renewal Application

by Admin on Feb.26, 2012, under Uncategorized

Unlike when you apply for your passport for the first time, getting a passport renewal is actually quite painless and fairly simple compared to how it used to be. It takes far less time, and in some cases, you might not even have to leave your home. You may be eligible to renew your passport either online or by mail. There are some requirements that must be met before deciding if passport renewal application is an option for you.

Passport Services

Getting a passport renewed by mail, normally, takes about six business weeks to fully process. Perhaps you are in a situation where you need it renewed before that. If that is the case your best bet is to go online. There you will be able to locate expedition services that are offered by various companies. They can ensure you receive your passport in time for your trip. Obviously, this is a very expensive option for passport renewal

Renewing Online

There are strict requirements you must meet if you are applying for a passport renewal. You have to have a passport that hasn’t been damaged. You must have gotten your first passport when you were 16 or older. Also, your original passport cannot be more than 15 years old. If you fail to meet any of these requirements you will have to get a passport renewed through the mail.

Steps For Mail Renewal

If you are going to go the mail route to get your passport renewed there are a few steps you must make sure to take. First you have to download and fill out all the proper forms from the internet. Once they are completed you package the forms in an envelope, along with your expired passports, a recent photograph, and your passport renewal fee, and send it off to the Department of State. Also, include any name or address changes you may have had since getting your last passport.

Expedited Renewal

If you want to get your pass port renewal expedited there are a few different ways you can go about it. The State Department offers expedition that takes about 2-3 weeks to process. If you are in a position where you need your passport renewed even faster than that you can hire an expedition service form the internet. It is a lot more expensive, but you can get your passport renewed from these sites in as little as 24 hours.

What to Eat at Camino’s Dinner for Colman Andrews on Sunday

by Admin on Feb.26, 2012, under San Francisco Resturaunts

Andrews’s follow-up to the acclaimed Country Cooking of Ireland.

Cookbook author Colman Andrews, who won a James Beard Award for his 2009 tome The Country Cooking of Ireland, has a follow-up book out, The Country Cooking of Italy. Andrews is making only one stop through the Bay Area on his book tour and it’s this Sunday, February 26, at Camino in Oakland. Because it’s Oscar night, they’ve still got some seats left, and since the Oscars are bound to be more boring than usual this year, you may want to consider having this as an out.

The four-course menu is below, and the dinner will be preceded by a reception with snacks and book-signing with Andrews. Also, the menu is a collaboration between Andrews and Camino’s own Russell Moore.

Snacks:
Panelle
Fried cardoons
Potato croquettes
Toasts with olive paste
Toasts with liptauer

Menu:

Grilled sardine with fennel & blood orange salad

Wood oven-baked lasagnette with artichokes

Fire-roasted lamb leg, grilled lamb ribs and lamb spiedino with prosciutto and sage; with grilled chicories and roasted potatoes

Cauliflower with spicy anchovy sauce

Pomegranate sorbetto and sbrisolana

The fun starts at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, and the price is per person including wine, not including tip and tax. This includes some rosé during the reception/book signing.

Also note this upcoming Savoie wine dinner on March 8.
