Robberies Rising in the Mission
by Admin on Oct.31, 2011, under San Francisco News
On Oct. 13 at 12:30 a.m., Rachel Newman was about to leave the Beauty Bar at 2299 Mission St. when she went to get her purse from the bar and it was gone.
“I put my bag down on the bar and put it under my coat and it was all in a pile. We were dancing right in front of it and I guess someone just came up and swiped it and then when we were ready to leave I picked up my jacket and there was nothing underneath it,” the 25-year-old Castro resident said.
Not everything was in the purse, just a few credit cards, a blackberry and house and car keys, but whoever took the purse has personal information and a set of keys, Newman said.
Newman has just become victim of the most committed crime in the Mission District. September had a total of 162 personal thefts, which is only two less than reported in August, according to the Mission Police COMPSTAT.
While robberies are slightly up, rapes, burglaries and aggravated assaults are down with an overall 6 percent reduction in violent crimes in the district compared to this same time last year, Capt. Gregory Corrales said.
“I always tell [Newman] not to put her purse down anywhere. I lived in Barcelona for three years so I know that if you were to do that, your stuff would get stolen in 0.2 seconds,” Ayesha Pirbhai, 24, Newman’s friend and roommate, said.
For some residents of the Mission, all the crime that is committed is simply ignored or overlooked.
“I’ve lived here for so long, I think I’ve learned to ignore all the crime. I know to try to avoid walking below Mission Street or by the BART late at night and I always take a cab if I need to get somewhere after I’ve been drinking,” Norman Pitt, Mission resident, said.
The Mission District is completely staffed with great police officers and when some go out to solve another crime, there are always enough in the station to ensure the safety of the districts’ residents, Corrales said.
Mission High Bears Dominant in First League Game
by Admin on Oct.02, 2011, under San Francisco News
With only three minutes remaining in an otherwise lackluster first half, Mission High senior captain Darius Grays took charge. Snatching the ball from the grasp of Marshall’s quarterback, Grays rumbled 40 yards down field into the end zone for a rare touchdown by a defensive end. There was no looking back for the Bears, who…

by Admin on Aug.31, 2011, under San Francisco Resturaunts

The Marina branch of Tacolicious.
Just a quick update about the upcoming expansion of Marina-based Tacolicious to the former New College complex in the Mission: The team now tells Grub Street that they’re aiming for a November opening, with construction well underway. Tablehopper has a new preview of the place as well, along with adjacent tequila bar Mosto, with details about the layout and vibe (“think Palm Springs entryways and Vegas patio living,”), an old-timey phone booth bank in which to take your cell-phone calls, and an al pastor spit behind the bar, from which meat will be shaved all day. Good Morning Mission!

It’s 6:32 a.m., 53° and heading for 69°. Nothing’s changed, basically. Same clothes you wore yesterday will work fine. Details are here. Who could succeed Hugo Chavez? The current verdict seems to be “I dunno.” Trouble in Air BnB Land. Apparently the San Francisco home of one of its hosts was burglarized, that user posted about…

It’s 7:35 a.m., 55°, raining and headed to only 56°. Details are here. I guess we should be grateful that it’s not snowing. La Hood talks about bikes and other livability issues, from Streetsblog. Sort of like watching C-Span on a rainy day. There’s a sleepover for adults at the Academy of Sciences — SF’s…

EaterWire: Blogger Casualty At Mission Pop-Up, Spoonbar Expands, More!
by Admin on Apr.02, 2011, under San Francisco Resturaunts
POP-UP DANGER – Mission Mission blogger Andrew Sarkarati innocently hit up the Rice Paper Scissors pop-up last night and went home with a dislocated shoulder. After using his blogger cred to cut the line, things went south: “the crowd figured out what was going on, and a little brawl ensued. Somebody grabbed his pho, there was pushing and shoving and shouting. And then he found himself falling backward over one of the restaurant’s little red stools, and onto another, at just right (wrong) angle.” [Mission Mission]
EXPANSIONWIRE – Healdsburg’s H2hotel is smartly doubling its bar area to allow startender Scott Beattie to do more. They are also adding wine on-tap and more small bites. It’s not surprising that’s the best part of Spoonbar’s business; high-quality drinks on the fly don’t come easy in wine country. Times are tough. [ISSF]
NOW OPEN – A reminder that Nojo in Hayes Valley and Bun Mee in Pacific Heights are now open and ready for your weekend enjoyment. The Chron‘s Janny Hu has this recap of her dinner at Nojo last night. Early reports, go! [EaterWire, ISSF]
THE SHUTTER - Berkeley’s 52-year-old La Fiesta Restaurant went out with a bang and is now closed. It will be replaced by Remy’s Mexican Restaurant, owned by one Manny Lopez. [Berkeleyside]
TENDERLOIN – Jebena coffee shop at Geary and Polk is putting the final touches on an extension next door, serving La Copa Loca gelato and sweet and savory crepes made by a real French chef. Passersby may not have noticed because the gelato sign keeps getting stolen. [The Tender]
